Jesus uses the illustration of being born again in his conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. I do not think Jesus chose his illustration lightly. To compare our salvation with a birth implies that it is something we experience, but have no choice in nor control over. The new birth, like our physical birth, happens to us without our asking to be born again, reaching for a lifepreserver (forceps?) etc. Secondly, Jesus compares the work of the Spirit to the wind. Wind happens. You can’t control it, stop it or, in those days, even explain it. I need to be born again, born from above, because I am spiritually dead and cannot help myself- or reach for any life-preserver thrown at me.

woops that’s tabula rasa… then again it might just be a type of tabla rosa, that is the sin nature with which we are all born, that condition and guilt that we bring into this world upon conception.

Patterson established his semi-Pelagianism aligning himself with Roman doctrine. As R.C. has stated along with others and a point that I made in a post titled Pelagius' Island, semi-Pelagianism becomes Pelagian when at that point of decision man is neutral and able to accept or reject further grace of God. Prevenient grace only awakens the tabla rosa man who then must swim out to the salvation ferry waiting off-shore. We hope that they wake up, but the recalcitrance is evident and the concrete is hardening even while they make their defense.
