Heaven, it’s easy!

(HT JMark)

Easy.jpgThis holiday season, Family ‘Christian’ Stores is offering:

Heaven…It’s Easy Button
Designed for those times when life becomes frustrating and confusing. Push this button and remember that “Heaven…it’s easy”

Scripture says:

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.

Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.

There’s probably a couple reasons an item like this makes me shake my head. For one, John 3:16 is referenced, and how does that text imply that heaven is easy? This needs to be balanced with verses you have listed, and passages such as in Luke 14, particularly verse 33 perhaps. And secondly, I think our tendency is to keep heaven as a nice promise we can put in our “back pocket” to take out and look at on a rainy day, but not setting our hope “completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ”. We are so absorbed in this world that we cannot appreciate the concept of sinners like ourselves spending an eternity in bliss with the Most High. We take heaven way too lightly. I might buy a button that says, “Heaven … ENTIRELY unattainable but by God’s sovereign grace”. I don’t guess that would be a big seller.

I work at Family “Christian” Stores. The easy button makes me sad. But working there is a great opportunity for me to lead people away from bad books and to good books. Most folks who shop there really don’t know what to buy and they really appreciate any suggestions. Sure doesn’t pay alot, though.
